PRESS RELEASE Theresa Byrnes CHANGELINGS April 29 through May 16, 2008 Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney is pleased to announce an exhibition of new ink paintings by Theresa Byrnes. This is the artist’s second exhibition with Saatchi & Saatchi in Sydney and follows her exhibition at Saatchi & Saatchi in New York in 2006. Byrnes refers to her studio as a laboratory, likening this body of work to that of a mad-scientist creating creatures. Water, fabric and maternal-love are the commonalties of human birth; the elements Byrnes utilizes to create these paintings. Byrnes develops unique techniques to realize specific effects, building crude apparatus and using unusual methods to manipulate color; the flow of water, the absorbency of fabric and of string. Some of these paintings evoke memories of kangaroos struck by a car, dead on the side of the highway, or of mining rigs, probably a result of her time spent in Gove, Arnhem Land. Byrnes’ began as a portrait painter in 1986. Byrnes was born in Australia in 1969, she lives |
