Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney is pleased to announce an exhibition of new ink paintings by Theresa Byrnes. This is the artist’s second exhibition with Saatchi & Saatchi in Sydney and follows her exhibition at Saatchi & Saatchi in New York in 2006.

Byrnes refers to her studio as a laboratory, likening this body of work to that of a mad-scientist creating creatures. Water, fabric and maternal-love are the commonalties of human birth; the elements Byrnes utilizes to create these paintings.

Byrnes develops unique techniques to realize specific effects, building crude apparatus and using unusual methods to manipulate color; the flow of water, the absorbency of fabric and of string.

Some of these paintings evoke memories of kangaroos struck by a car, dead on the side of the highway, or of mining rigs, probably a result of her time spent in Gove, Arnhem Land.

Byrnes’ began as a portrait painter in 1986.
Since 1996 she has been exploring abstraction.
Byrnes’ grounding in portraiture enables her to fully release into the abstract.

Byrnes was born in Australia in 1969, she lives
and works in New York.
