Theresa Byrnes began to exhibit her art in 1986 at the age of 16. Painting is her core medium. Her roots are in oil painting. Byrnes moved from portraits to abstraction in 1995. Since 2005 Theresa has chosen ink painting as her main medium and since 2003 she recommenced portraiture part-time to supply the demand for her portraits of children. She began performance art in 1988. Her performance is politically charged and has become an integral part of her arts practice. Byrnes made her first experimental video in 2001 and some of her video and sound-scapes are included in her annual performances. She often develops unique techniques and apparatus to create her work. In 1996 Theresa founded the Theresa Byrnes Foundation Inc., which funded a research fellowship to further gene-transfer therapy. Byrnes published her autobiography ‘The Divine Mistake’ in 1999 (Pan Macmillan, Australia). Theresa moved to New York in 2000.
